First Milk Next Generation programme
Our Next Generation programme is an important way of engaging young people associated with our members’ businesses. It also provides an opportunity to look towards the many challenges and opportunities facing the dairy sector.
The aim of the programme is to understand what their aims and plans are for their own business, what they want from a co-operative and their thoughts and ideas on First Milk. We also want to help young producers broaden their knowledge of the industry and share best practice to ensure their farm businesses are as resilient as possible for the future.
The Next Generation programme offers members of the group the opportunity to go on farm visits and learn about different farming systems. Members also have the opportunity to go on field trips, as well as take part in workshops and Q&As with both internal and external speakers. Previous visits have included farm visits to learn more about spring and autumn block calving, a site visit to Ornua, the First Milk AGM, and a Q&A with the member council.
Our Next Generation programme now has over 200 young members participating and we continue to actively encourage new members. The group is open to those under 40 years of age who are associated with First Milk members’ businesses – whether that’s sons and daughters or key staff on current members’ farms.
